Postage labels
Postage labels from postage label machines differ from automat labels, because postage labels
have to be used on the day of issue. Therefore the date of issue is printed on them; they don't
have to be cancelled. We restrict ourselves to machines used by PTT (later TPG) in post offices,
business points and service points, leaving aside the labels from franking machines used by private
persons, organisations or firms.

Postage label machines manufactured by FramaAfter a pilot stage with 'Setright' and 'Satas' machines, experiments took place since 1977 with postage label machines manufactured by Frama. In Amsterdam -Oosterdokskade- three prototypes were tested starting 17 October 1977, to be recognised by a small type of digits on the label to indicate the hour of issue. More than a year later, in December 1978, some new models with large digits to indicate the hour of issue were installed. As of 20 May 1981 a new cliché with a separate FM-number was put in five machines (previously FM 000 in all machines). |

It took some years, until 27 January 1986, before a substantial number of postage label machines was
installed in 126 post offices all over The Netherlands. The POSTAUMAAT stamp club provided labels of
the first and last days of issue, as well as First Day Covers. In the mid nineties many Frama machines
were taken out of operation and as of 1 September 1998 over one hunderd machines were officially withdrawn.
After a short restart with 20 machines, PTT decided to terminate the use of Frama postage label machines.
The last machine worked in the Leiden/Schipholweg post office until 31 december 2001, the very last day
before the change from guilder currency to euro.

Postage label machines manufactured by Hytech
A short period from September until December 2000 (see frame "Automat Labels - The Netherlands"), during which
the postage label machines manufactured by the Australian firm Hytech were tested, proved to be the final step
to the introduction of these machines on a wide scale. On 29 May 2001 the first Hytech machines were taken into
operation in PTT business points. In June 2001 another 30 machines were installed. The machines produced white
self adhesive labels with a red thermo print and a receipt. They were operated by PTT clerks.

One month later, on 2 July 2001, the white labels were replaced by a red/orange label with black thermo print.
New machines were installed in all TPG post offices, business points and service points. In some machines the
print used in June 2001 was still programmed on 2 July 2001, resulting in upside down prints with the wrong text.
The machines in business points and service points produce receipts, the ones in post offices don't. |

In the meantime quite a number of new business points have opened their doors. An
overview of post offices, business points and service points can be
accessed online. Because of the introduction of the euro as of 2 January 2002, the f. (for florin = guilder)
has been replaced by the € on the labels and the receipts.

As of mid January 2003 the text GEHOLPEN DOOR VERKOPER (ASSISTED BY CLERK) was added on the receipts.

These labels have a fake perforation to the left and to the right. During 2004 these rolls have also been introduced in
business points and service points, but in these offices the old stock with PTTPOST and TPGPOST was to be used up.

introduced in business points and service points. In these offices however the old stock with PTTPOST, TPGPOST

Postage label machines in the rest of the worldTo the POSTAUMAAT stamp club, this is still unpaved territory. As the pictures below indicate, there is a wide variety of postage labels throughout the world. For specialists it is important to have access to good sources of information about new issues. One of the ways to achieve that, would be to publish articles in the BULLETIN. We welcome every contribution from our members to that end. |
